Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [Reading/Literature]
The recently released 5th book of the series is superb and perfect for motivating older/advanced students (age 12-16) to learn new vocabulary and expressions as well as build on their reading comprehension and discussion skills. An added bonus here is that the 5th book is yet to be released in languages other than English, so for most students the content should be new and exciting! English Raven materials developed to supplement this book so far include detailed English-to-English wordlists for Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, and a Summary/Review/Activity Kit for Chapter 1.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets [Media Studies Activities]
English Raven members have access to three Media Studies Quiz Books designed for application to the second Harry Potter film using DVD facilities. By using a DVD version of the film, both language and subtitles can be set to English. These materials were developed in conjunction with extensive experimentation with EFL learners between the ages of 10 and 16, for which the film was broken up into 4 sections/viewings. Viewing 1 and 3 involved answering quiz questions and fill-the-gaps whilst watching the film (using Media Studies Quiz Books 1 and 3). The second viewing involved the students watching and compiling their own questions for other students as part of cooperative group work (using Media Studies Quiz Book 2). The fourth viewing did not involve any formal quizzes, but by this stage the majority of students had learned how to read and listen for considerable detail whilst watching the film and did not need any prompting. And best of all, they loved every minute of it!
NEW! Harry Potter Wizard English Lessons [Reading/Listening/Speaking & Writing]
Just added to the site's resources are four lessons covering content from Chapter 1 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. These are best suited for intermediate to advanced level students looking for a new challenge to their abilities in the four general learning areas, in connection with a strong theme they are likely to be very familiar with! Each lesson has an Annotated Teacher's Version. The Reading lesson features a comprehensive English-to-English wordlist, and the Speaking lesson incorporates some grammar and functional language usage tips.
