Phonics Study Elements
A typical course in Phonics may utilize the following:
Stage 1: Motor Skills; Alphabet letters/sequence
Stage 2: Consonant Sounds; Short Vowels
Stage 3: Long Vowels; Long vs Short Vowels
Stage 4: Consonant Blends; Consonant Digraphs
Stage 5: R-controlled Vowels; Vowel Digraphs/Diphthongs
Stage 6: Parts of Speech; Prefixes and Suffixes; Syllables/Word Stress; Tone/Intonation; Compounds/Homophones; Synonyms/Antonyms; Contractions
The list above provides a general list of Phonics elements and how they might be ordered and sequenced. Teachers should consider appropriate time frames according to the ability, needs and progress of their individual students/classes. While targeted elements are the focus of study, students should also be recycling previous elements and combining them as they learn and apply words.
The downloadable Phonics Starter and Phonics Builder kits on this site can also help to give guidelines on what to study, to what degree and in what order.
