An Overview of Kidzfoniks
This section of englishraven.com is dedicated to building a comprehensive online Phonics resource for teachers of EFL/ESL. In addition to defining the study area known as "Phonics", I have attempted to give an overview of typical Phonics study elements and an outline of how they can/ought to be sequenced. Teachers often tell me they are unsure of how to go about teaching Phonics, so I have also made a complete teacher's kit called 'Phonics and Vocabulary Building' - a 45 page document in PDF format containing a wealth of games, activities, worksheets and adaptable templates along with detailed explanations on how to apply them. English Raven is also proud to make available here a range of downloadable Phonics Kits, starting with very young learners in Kindergarten and Pre-School and moving up into beginner-level Elementary age brackets. Phonics Starter and Phonics Builder comprise 45 lessons and more than 140 pages of downloadable material. Each kit is also accompanied with a comprehensive teacher's guide.
These kits are the results of extensive experimentation with (and development of) Phonics teaching and curriculum catering to young learners in South Korea. They represent around 3 years of trial and error and fine-tuning in young learner classrooms, not to mention a great deal of research and workshop-based discussion centered around Phonics teaching methodology.
The Phonics kits represent a very gradual step-by-step building process designed to build key skills in students - Phonemic Awareness, Motor Skills, Sound Identification and Production, Reading and Writing. Each kit consists of progressive lessons that are page numbered to assist in maintaining continuity - they can be downloaded and made into textbooks, or simply be employed as a convenient range of extra application materials to supplement an existing Phonics curriculum.
