This introduces students to the various Sentence Navigator activities, targeting reasonably simple language orientated around introductions, general actions, calendar terms, weather and clothing. It also builds familiarity with communicative activities that combine speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Students begin fine-tuning their basic grammar skills at this level, and actively use language based on likes and wants, suggesting activities and identifying localities and items required for those activities. They are encouraged to differentiate between basic grammatical forms and communicative functions, the most prominent area being the difference between routine activity and here-and-now activity.
This Navigator introduces crossword challenges as a practice tool, and illustrates differences between polite and casual language. Students learn variety of language forms orientated around offering, requesting, inquiring and commanding/prohibiting.
Money and amounts are covered, as well as the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers.
This reviews and expands various language elements already covered, and encourages more in the way of clause linking to create longer, more intricate sentences. Students learn how to identify and describe ailments and basic problems, and there is intense focus on pronouns and subject-verb agreement. Students are also introduced to the future tense orientated around travel plans.
