English Raven's Astro-Nationalities cards feature astronauts holding flags from a variety of nationalities (mostly European). There are 18 cards in the set, each with a special backing and a listing (in green) for the nationality in adjective form and a listing (in blue) for the country name in noun form. There are also six extra blank cards for teachers who may like to add their own nationality listings.
Game Idea:
- Tell the students that they are all on a rocket ship heading to the international Space Station, and each student is representing a different nation. To pass time during the rocket trip, the various astronauts are going to play a guessing game about who comes from where. The cards are shuffled and dealt to the students. They conceal their own identity and take turns guessing where their classmates come from. The question could focus on the green adjectival form and the answers could be targeted on a blue noun form (for example: "Are you the Dutch astronaut?" - "Yes, I'm from the Netherlands" or "No, I'm from the United Kingdom") or vice versa. If someone's nationality is successfully guessed, their card is overturned and they are out of the game. The last person to retain their card and secret nationality is thus awarded the winner of that round.
